Remembrance of Dot.coms Past

There was a time when exuberance seemed rational
And teenage millionaires were thinking multinational:
"Don’t worry," analysts said, "About the bottom line.
Put your money in Pets.com and you’ll be fine."

Loudly did those new economy trumpets blare
When Etoys stood at $85 a share.
Buy high, sell higher was an oft-heard refrain
Before all that money went down the drain.

Web sites which had nothing to offer
Still found millions of dollars in the coffer.
Today they are the subject of much mirth and ridicule
As their revenues, if any, prove minuscule.

Surely something must have been out of kilter
When you received a hot tip from your butcher.
It was indeed a market gone berserk;
Pity those poor CEOs currently out of work.

By March 2K the Daq had reached its eerie high
As everyone wanted a piece of the Internet pie.
Now, while we hear the new millennium’s opening bell
The noise from the floor is sell, sell, sell!

At the dot.com dustbin the numbers grow
Full of bright ideas, but no cash flow.
Who’s next? On this the smart money can agree,
It won’t be IBM, Coca-Cola or GE.
