Battle to Say Indian Leader’s Name Enters Its Third Week

Efforts to pronounce Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s name have now begun their third week with some insiders fearing that U.S. leaders not ever be able to say it correctly.

Secretary of State Colin Powell appeared to have advanced as far as the third syllable in the second name during a political talk show last Sunday. Yet he had to retreat upon an impending commercial break. Subsequent American forays are anticipated in the coming days.

Administration attempts seemed to have reached an impasse last week when President Bush was asked to address concerns over the growing tensions between India and Pakistan during an impromptu press conference in Europe.

"I would urge the respected leader of India, that great internationally acclaimed statesman of the sub-continent, that dude in New Delhi… what was the question again?" replied the president.
