Women Golfers Take Away From The Manly, Athletic Image Of The Game

When we think of great sportsmen, the beacons of athleticism who make up the PGA Tour immediately spring to mind.

From Raymond Floyd having his caddie pick up his ball after it drops into the cup to Fuzzy Zoeller smoking a cigarette between shots, no other sport can boast as many well-rounded competitors as golf.

Golfers such as John Daly personify the sort of rugged athleticism the sport has come to symbolize.

Whether it be repairing a divot or a ball mark, throwing grass in the air to check the direction of the wind or simply urinating behind a tree, golf tests all areas of an athlete's ability.

Therefore, due to the physical demands it places on its participants, golf should continue remain the exclusive domain of men, and preferably wealthy (non-Jewish) white men. For, in this age of ever-expanding equality, golf continues to serve as the one link to our segregationist, chauvinistic and exclusionary past.

Perhaps this position was best summed up by PGA player Vijay Singh last week when he said, "You know, it's like, I mean, I don't know."
