World Cup 2010: Where Are the Goooooools?

The most famous match in Hungarian soccer history took place in November 1953 when the Magyars squared off against England at Wembley Stadium. The visitors upset the hosts at that match by a score of 6-3.

Fifty-seven years later, those numbers have been immortalized in the minds of even the most passive of Hungarian soccer fans. There is a pub in Budapest called 6:3, and a few years ago a Hungarian film was produced with the title “6:3″.

It took seven games at this year’s World Cup to reach the same number of goals that were scored in the 1953 contest. (The Germans in their rout of Australia on Sunday scored four, double the best combined number of goals for any of the previous matches.)

Six months after the Wembley match, in May 1954, a second match was played between England and Hungary in Budapest, Hungary won 7-1. Eight goals.
