Victor Meldrew Was Lucky
At the start of the uproariously funny and occasionally dark sitcom “One Foot in the Grave“, Victor Meldrew, the maladroit and misanthropic central character, has just taken an (involuntary) early retirement at the age of 60.The show focuses in large part on Meldrew coming to terms — or trying to come to terms — with having more time on his hands now that he has left the workplace.
Such a plot may no longer be plausible to a vast majority of an audience in the English-speaking world. According to a report on Marketwatch recently, many of us will have to work a good decade or two longer than Victor.
Many Americans will have to keep on working well into their 70s and 80s to afford retirement, according to the study, titled “The Impact of Deferring Retirement Age on Retirement Income Adequacy.”
