The Sisters
Time and again, Manhattan has proved itself to be the perfect setting.
And it is no different in 2006 as the island plays host to
Chevhov’s “Three Sisters.”
The time and place may be different but the issues the main characters
face still prevail, ie, sisters trying to deal with the memory
of their deceased father.
the youngest) together at a Manhattan college.
It turns out this is not as simple as it may appear, for the family is rife
with various tensions: Marcia and Olga try and do their best to look after
the interests of their little sis, neither can stand their brothers fiancee,
and, of course, Dad’s ghost constantly lurks in their thoughts.
Memories — unhappy ones — of their collective childhood in Charleston
start to creep out of the closet.
Add to this eccentric assemblage odd romantic inclinations and neuroses
that seem singularly New York, and you have yourself one heck of a party.
With a cast led by Mary Stuart Masterson, Maria Bello and Erika Christensen,
it is worth catching this film for the acting alone. What’s more, it’s
hard for us at Chortler not to like any film with Rip Torn in it –
here playing an aged professor.
