The World’s Fastest Indian
The World’s Fastest Indian might not strike you as the most
politically correct of film titles. But this is not as it may seem.
For, the title actually refers to a 1920 Indian motorcycle.
a 68-year-old from Invercargill, New Zealand obsessed in the belief that
his beloved vehicle – which he is constantly tinkering with — can set the
world’s land speed record.
In 1967, with some financial assistance from his fellow townsfolk,
he journeys to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah for
the annual Speed Week.
Despite his failure to register for the event on time, officials
in Utah don’t have it in them to send Burt back to New Zealand,
and he is allowed to take part.
Plus, like his neighbors back in New Zealand, the organizers
in Utah have their doubts about the Indian’s ability to do everything
Burt believes it can do.
Nevertheless, probably know how this film is going to end judging by
the title. Still, that doesn’t make it any less enthralling as we
follow this long and — from Burt Munro’s perspective – last shot
through to its unlikely goal.
What’s more, a calm, collected Anthony Hopkins in an atypical performance
portraying the typical humility of a New Zealander is also a joy to behold.
