Report: German Players Were on Speed During 1954 World Cup Championship Match

The German national team won the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland while many of their players were under the influence of pervitin (also know as crystal meth and “Hitler speed”), according to a report published in Kronen Zeitung, an Austrian daily.

The information, made available by Leipzig University in Germany, claims that several German players believed they were receiving Vitamin C injections and not methamphetamines before the final match against a heavily favored Hungarian side — which included soccer great Ferenc Puskas.

The Germans won the final game 3-2 in Berne.

Hungarian news portal index.hu reports that in 2004 doping rumors surfaced about the 1954 German side as well.
