The International Dodgeball Federation

A few years ago, Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn starred in a film that takes the sport of dodgeball to overzealous extremes. As with all stories, it could not have been formed in a vacuum. It must have come from somewhere. Perhaps that somewhere was one of the venues which houses matches under the purview of the International Dodgeball Federation.

No, it couldn’t have been, because the IDBF website chides the movie’s creators for the type of ball used in the film: “The DodgeBall movie director looked at all kinds of dodge balls but settled on the old schoolyard red rubber ball because it seemed to be more ‘violent’. The IDBF agrees it’s more violent- we strictly forbid its use by member organizations.”

For a sport that rarely if ever makes its way on to primetime television, dodgeball boasts some impressive statistics in terms of overall participation. There are over 300,000 sanctioned players worldwide, and dodgeball federations have formed in Japan, Puerto Rico, Pakistan, and Australia.
