National Rounders Association (England)
The game which is identified closely with the American national pastime of baseball is still alive and well in England, Wales, Iran, China, Ireland and Pakistan. It was these six countries which participated in the 2008 Rounders World Cup in Sheffield, England, with sadly no American contingent.
To anyone living in the United Kingdom, rounders would not be deserving of a mention on a list of obscure, unusual and just plain weird sports. There are, after all, more than three million people in the UK who take part in rounders games each year, making it one of the most popular outdoor games in Great Britain. However, rounders is rarely mentioned or thought about in the United States, unless in an historical context as a game that morphed into baseball in the 19th century. There is no rounders association in the United States. But a version of the game from which baseball was said to be derived is played every week in the spring and summer by a group of British expats in Philadelphia who also manage, according to reports, to get fairly blotto in the process.
