Ferrari Non Capisce

With the paucity of athletic competition on European television during these post-World Cup summer days, Mr. Chortler was left with no other choice but to witness the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim yesterday afternoon.

Sadly, the word “competition” does not appear applicable to Formula One, and certainly the word’s meaning is not understood by the Ferrari team, which demanded that race leader Felipe Massa concede first place to the team’s other driver, Fernando Alonso.

Ferrari has subsequently been fined $100,000 for this violation of everything competitive sporting events should represent. The amount, in the Monte Carlo-centered world of Grand Prix, is below paltry. The only way to drive the point home that this sort of unsporting behavior won’t be tolerated is to disqualify them from the race.

It was eight years ago at the Austrian Grand Prix that Mr. Chortler swore off Formula One after Rubens Barrichello – despite having dominated the race – was ordered by Ferrari to let his then-teammate Michael Schumacher cross the finish line ahead of him.

Perchance in another eight years the folks in charge at Ferrari will get the message.
