MY TURN

Don't Worry About Journalists

There has been a lot of talk recently - most of it conceived by the folks who formulate what we are wont to talk about - regarding the precarious state of newspapers, particularly American newspapers.

Mr. Chortler is a kindly soul, sympathetic to many a cause and possessed with a great fondness for cats. Nevertheless, he cannot bring himself to feel in any way sorry for the present condition of the newspaper business.

To be sure, Mr. Chortler, having lost many jobs himself, does not delight in seeing others lose theirs. Neither does the man who has run this thriving Internet publication for over half a century bear any anger at the print media for botching its coverage of the most important issues of recent times. Nor is he irate about the constant kowtowing between the ink-stained scribes and those who meander about the corridors of power.

Nay, Mr. C does not pity journalists for the simple reason that if there one group of people which might stand to benefit more than others in this time of economic strife then that group is journalists.

Ponder this a moment or less.

If one group of people should have the skill set for this turbulent time - ie, self-reliant, persistent, communicative, persuasive - then that group is comprised of journalists.

Now that I've made my point my only wish is that some of those who practice the craft could add another attribute to the list: succinctness.
