DVD PICK The Bituminous Coal Queens of Pennsylvania
The mockumentary genre has been alive and well in recent months. Too numerous and often fitting into a formula all of its own. That is why it is refreshing to view one that preceded the rage.
"The Bituminous Coal Queens of Pennsylvania" follows the story of Sarah Rush, an actress known for her appearances on "Happy Days", "Battlestar Galactica" and "Everybody Loves Raymond".
In this funny take on small-town American life we retrace Sarah's roots as a winner of the local beauty contest back when she was all of 16 years old.
Sarah returns for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Coal Queen Pageant and the King Coal Festival in August 2003. She revisits the State Theatre in Uniontown, Pa as rehearsals are underway. Fourteen area high schools are represented in the contest, which is made up of talent, dress, and an impromptu question and answer segment.
Through these young ladies we obtain an in-depth and comical but light-hearted look at the qualities and
people that comprise and unite the community.
