DVD PICK Jack Black in Nacho Libre
Jack Black is a lot of comics rolled into one. John Candy and
John Belushi to name a couple, but with his own unique specialized
Jack Black character he brings to every appearance.
Nacho
Libre takes us south of the border where Black takes on a
character of Ignacio who is not good at doing much. He spent
his formative years in a monastery and we find him all grown up working
as a cook in the same domain.
The monastery and the orphans they keep desperately need money.
A flash of brilliance strikes and Ignacio decides to enter wrestling.
He discovers through the sport that he does indeed have a talent for something,
and through it there might be a way to make money and impress the lovely Sister Encarnacion.
Lucha (wrestling) is not condoned by the church, so Nacho must conceal his true
identity as he takes on the best and the brightest the sport has to offer - hilarity ensuing in the process
and giving hope that life at the orphanage might just get a little better.
The film was directed by Jared Hess, he of Napoleon Dynamite fame.
The DVD includes a potpourri of added features such as the main bonus "Dinner and a
Commentary" in which Jack Black, Jared Hess and producer Michael White partake
in an evening repast and discussion of the film. Also included is a background featurette
about filming in Oaxaca and some history about the sport.
