DVD PICK
Season One of MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge
Where do we begin with MXC? There is just too much material contained on
this zany and uproariously funny 262-minute DVD that this meager mention of
it cannot do it justice.
Vic Romano (Wilson) and Kenny Blankenship (Darga) guide us through the inanity
of 1980s Japanese television and the pinnacle of the genre "Takeshi's Castle"
(hosted by Japanese movie and television star Takeshi Kitano.)
There is not a single trace of literal translation from the original show,
which partially explains how faux teams such as America's Meat Handlers can
take on The Cartoon Voice-Over Actors in riotous contests like the log drop,
sinkers and floaters and window pain.
Victor Wilson, Chris Darga, John Cervenka and Mary Scheer have repurposed the
show to resemble an American extreme sports show at its worst excesses. Sideline reporter
Guy LeDouche and field marshal Captain Tenneal (both voiced by Cervenka) contribute
hysterical post-competition interviews.
The two-disc collection is loaded with extras including an Original Episode of
"Takeshi's Castle", MXC Original Sales Presentation, Kenny Blankenship's Most
Painful Eliminations of the Season and select episode audio commentaries by Victor Wilson,
Christopher Darga, John Cervenka, Mary Sheer, Paul Abeyta, Peter Kaikko and Larry Strawther.
