DVD PICK
The Book of Daniel
The series which caused a storm over at NBC earlier in the year at NBC has made
its way onto DVD.
Christian groups took umbrage over the show's portrayal of Jesus. And soon
thereafter the "edgy, challenging and courageous" program had been dropped
from the network's roster.
The Book
of Daniel stars Emmy nominee Aidan Quinn ('An Early Frost,' 'Plainsong,'
'Legends of the Fall') as the Rev. Daniel Webster, an Episcopalian priest with
an addiction to painkillers. Webster is challenged on many levels as he struggles
to be a good husband, father and minister, while navigating an often rocky relationship
with the church hierarchy, led by Bishop Beatrice Congreve (Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, '
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore,' 'Requiem of a Dream').
Though a short-lived show, Daniel sure gets his fair share of dysfunctionality:
a gay Republican son, a daughter doing drugs, an adopted Chinese son who dates
a girl whose parent's are anti-Asian, and a bishop who is having an affair with his father.
The new two-disc DVD features all seven episodes, or four of the programs that never aired.
