Relationships are like those Russian dolls, thinks Xavier, you never
know which one is going to be the last.
Xavier and his friends live in some idealized version of Europe, a
land where $4 espressos and shuttling between capitals just goes with the territory.
Russian Dolls is a sequel to the huge film and DVD hit L'Auberge Espagnole,
where Xavier (Romain Duris, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) still
can't seem to make his mark in life. He dreams of being a successful novelist, yet
his greatest achievement is a co-credit on a sappy soap opera.
For someone who is not satisfied with his life, one can't help but envy his
record with women, who are attractive, smart and successful. Nevertheless, his
inability to find the right course in life makes his romances evanescent.
Five years hence, Director Cedric Klapisch returns with many of the same actors
from L'Auberge Espagnole, including the charming Audrey Tautou and Cecile de France,
one of France's most popular young stars.
This film was nominated for two Cesar awards for Best Supporting Actress
(Cecile de France and Kelly Reilly) and a Cesar for Best Editing.
The DVD contains a feature on how the film was made.
