DVD PICK Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema
Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema deserves to be seen by a broad audience, and not be
one that merely winds up preaching to the choir, the gay choir.
For, you don't even have to be remotely gay to be intrigued by the
stories enclosed on this disc.
Though Hollywood has just picked up on the box office potential of homosexual
subject matter in Brokeback - or, more to the point, realized that it won't
adversely affect its bottom line -- this DVD reveals gay influence in filmmaking
has been around ⦠well, since films have been around. And that's okay.
The documentary takes us as far back as 1947 and clips from Fireworks,
from avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger. The film, a story of a gay man who
fantasizes about being beaten by sailors and explores his sexual freedom, allowed
Anger to garner a significant following among French cineastes.
A number of influential names in current independent films, such as Gus Van Sant,
John Waters, Wilson Cruz and Guinevere Turner, offer some eye-opening stories
and recount a few insightful tales through the course of the movie.
Bonus interviews include coming out stories, first gay movie memories and
favorite movie love scenes.
