Loverboy
Directed by Kevin Bacon, Loverboy is based on the Victoria Redel novel of the same
name and stars Kyra Sedgwick as Emily, a single mother of a six-year-old boy. Emily is
obsessed with producing the perfect child, an obsession that seems to make her take leave
of her sanity and cross the frontier into insanity.
In other words this woman needs help. And her poor son, whom she calls
Loverboy, must suffer through this version of motherhood taken to an extreme,
an extreme that is very adeptly played (at times eerily so) by Sedgwick. She
won't let the boy out of her sight, and the viewer can't help but feel the need
both to have her seek help and get him away from her.
The film also stars Campbell Scott, Marisa Tomei, Oliver Platt and Matt Dillon who
has produced a number of solid cinematic performances in the past year: the newly
married husband who lets his wastrel pal camp out at his house in You, Me and
Dupree and the Bukowski prototype in Factotum.
Special features include audio and video commentary with Kevin Bacon.
