DVD PICK
Brick
As much as we try and indulge our penchant for light-hearted adolescent comedy,
it is refreshing to see young characters portrayed with some depth and character,
as is the case in
Brick.
Rian Johnson's film models itself on the classic Humphrey Bogart/Sam Spade style of
detective work, reset in modern-day California.
Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a high-school loner drawn
out of his cocoon the day his ex-girlfriend, Emily (Emilie De Ravin),
with whom he remains smitten, goes missing.
Brendan must draw on the power of his own cunning, a cunning he believes
lacking in the authorities around him, in order to extract the answer
to the mystery at the heart of his risky investigation. The search forces him to be
pulled closer to the cliques he had asiduously tried to avoid until this stage.
The quest leads him closer to discovering more about himself, his love and the roots
of the puzzle in the most suspenseful 110 minutes to hit the DVD market in some time.
Bonus Features:
Over 20 Minutes of deleted and extended scenes.
The Inside Track: casting the roles
